Notes on the list of anti inflammatory medicines
Paracetamol is a good painkiller, and is less likely to cause side-effects. Although paracetamol does not reduce inflammation, it is often the preferred painkiller for muscle and joint conditions that cause pain but have little inflammation. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is not an NSAID because although it is an antipyretic and analgesic, it is not an anti-inflammatory.
Our list is actually a list of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs). NSAIDs can be used as simple pain killers (analgesics), but paracetamol is usually preferable, as it is likely to have less unwanted side effects, and costs less.
NSAIDs also come as creams and gels that you rub into your skin for joint or muscle pain. You can rub these gently into the painful area three or four times a day for up to a week to relieve pain. NSAIDs have less potential for abuse than opioids; physical dependence on these medications has not been reported.
Researchers at The Rockefeller University found that a receptor known to shield HIV and Hepatitis C from an effective immune response is also essential to the therapeutic effects of a common anti-inflammatory drug, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). The finding opens up new possibilities for developing drugs to suppress the inflammation caused by autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
Research shows that inflammation in the body not only increases your risk of disease (including heart disease and stroke) but can make it tougher to lose weight as well.
Aspirin and the related NSAR drugs act on the arachidonic acid biosynthesis cascade, which plays a central role in the onset of pain and inflammation. They thus prevent the synthesis of specific prostaglandins, which are essential for vital bodily functions.
Aspirin is an NSAID medicine but it does not increase the chance of a heart attack. Aspirin can cause bleeding in the brain, stomach, and intestines.
Inflammatory processes may have various causes, an infection, for example. Chronic inflammatory diseases also exist, such as ulcerous colitis or multiple sclerosis, where, due to a constant state of inflammation, the cells are destabilised, provoking neoplasic processes.
What is inflammation? Inflammation is the process by which the body’s white blood cells protect us from injury, infection and irritation. This protective process causes pain and swelling when you bump your head, redness and itching when you get a bug bite and sneezing and aching when you suffer from the flu. Inflammation is the body’s tissue reacting to certain things that cause irritation. Excess fat is one such irritant.
Patients should always address specific medical concerns with their physicians. Patients who take non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for severe arthritis must take them regularly over a long time. Several weeks may be needed to feel the results, so it is important to keep taking the medicine, even if it does not seem to be working at first.
